Murphy to the Rescue: Saves Halloween in Twin Cities

Customer:
Grocery Retailer

Murphy Warehouse Company Services: Warehousing and Logistics Services

Challenge: Customize Warehouse to Meet Unexpected Needs

Solution: The customer, founded in Minneapolis, MN, more than 130 years ago, has been a long-standing partner with Murphy Warehouse Company. The company is a leading provider in the grocery retailing industry and supplies numerous grocery stores in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area. Murphy was responsible for storing the company's on-going and seasonal finished goods.

During one August week, in particular, Minnesota was experiencing an unexpected heat wave. At the time, the local grocery retailer had been storing its entire Halloween candy supply with Murphy. The temperatures, however, could not be averted and soon a fear arose of the candy melting. Murphy received the call at 2:15 p.m. on a Friday and was notified of the potential hazard. Unless the warehouse temperature was lowered, the entire stock of Snickers, M&M's and other Halloween favorites would melt in the heat. With a 70-plus truckload inventory, there was not enough time to reorder before the approaching holiday.

The retailer did not know where to turn, and looked to Murphy to solve the pending fiasco. Murphy had little time to solve the issue, but acted quickly and rose to the challenge. Members of the Murphy Warehouse team pulled together their resources and created a temporary air conditioning unit using generators, flat beds and piping to cool down the 50,000 square feet supply. By midnight that same Friday, Murphy lowered the warehouse temperature and saved the Halloween candy from melting.

The circumstances, although unique, did not faze Murphy Warehouse Company. Through its dependable and consistently reliable services, and driven staff, Murphy delivered a customized solution within a timely fashion. Murphy prides itself in going above and beyond to provide its customers with exceptional assistance, even in the most unusual circumstances. And, this Halloween proved to be no different.

By attaching piping to the rented generators, Murphy was able to control the air temperature inside the warehouse.
