Welcome to the Newest Edition of Green Notes!

Communication is vital to managing a supply chain and meeting the needs of our customers. That is the purpose of this newsletter -- to keep you informed about what's new at Murphy Warehouse Company, with the logistics industry and even with you, our customers.

I can remember my father leaving Green Notes written with a green pen to employees at Murphy Warehouse. Today, I'm proud to begin my own tradition of Green Notes -- now conveyed through email, rather than paper and green ink. You'll note that our newsletter logo features our commitment to being a green company in our practices and in our facilities -- and the photo at the top is of a native prairie, which we've planted outside three of our logistics campuses!

We want this newsletter to serve you, our readers. That's why I invite you to tell me what you think about it. We want to address the topics that speak to you. Please reply to this newsletter with any comments, or send them to greennotes@murphywarehouse.com.

I look forward to hearing from you, and I hope you enjoy the first edition of Green Notes.

Warm Regards,

Saving Paper

Did you know that the average worker goes through 10,000 sheets of paper every year? And according to the EPA, paper and paperboard accounts for nearly 40 percent of our garbage. (MN Pollution Control Agency)

Paper is an inevitable feature in any office, particularly in the logistics industry. That's why Murphy is always looking for ways to conserve paper.

Effective immediately, we will be sending only one copy of each invoice to our customers. This decision was not only made for environmental reasons, but several customers also have asked that we reduce the number of copies we send, and we always listen to our customers.

Over the last year, we have made several other changes to save paper:

  • We offer electronic invoices, rather than mailed paper copies, to our customers; some of our customers even use monthly statements, rather than copies of each invoice
  • We send shipment confirmations and receipts to clients electronically
  • We no longer print monthly reports, including ledger transaction, outstanding payables and outstanding receivables; instead, they are available electronically
  • Our accounting department stores all invoices electronically, eliminating duplicate paper copies
  • We streamlined our operations and broadened the availability of online resources though our Intranet
  • We have broadened our use of electronic communication such as email and even this newsletter
  • We have eliminated some printed multi-part forms and will continue to reduce the number of remaining forms

Reducing paper use cuts waste, saves money and is more secure. But let's not forget that when we conserve paper, we will be saving trees.

If you have an idea or suggestion on how we can better serve your account and save on paper and energy, please let us know.

Here's a tip for your office: Simply switching to 100% recycled paper saves about 4,100 kilowatts of energy, 7,000 gallons of water, 60 pounds of air emissions, 3 cubic yards of landfill space and 17 trees for every ton of recycled paper used.
